I ran into this at work today while creating a new logo for BarCamp Orlando 2010 and noticed this question is a popular search on Google. I think this could be really useful if, for example, you created a vectorized icon set and wanted to make them available as a custom shape set as well. Luckily, the solution is a real piece of cake!

I recently received this sweet little message from Sabina, a visitor to my blog:
Hi! Your tutorials are so helpful, thank you! Will you be doing a tutorial on how you created your “about me photo”? The colors and lighting is very beautiful!
Since I began writing tutorials, I’ve tended to save my steps as I work in Photoshop in the event I want to share them later. So, Sabina, you’re in luck! This tutorial will cover adding colorful lighting to a photo and adding some really easy lighting effects. First, let me show you the photo to which we’re referring:

I recently completed a new digital painting, “Divinity,” that features Ian McShane in Kings. If you’ve never heard of it, Kings was a fantastic television drama that was canceled after the first season—it couldn’t find an audience in the United States, but it had great writing and was beautifully shot. I highly recommend it.
While I was watching the show some months ago, I screencaptured a poignant moment for later use as a painting reference. Before I talk about the process, here’s a look at my final product:

Being the most technical artwork I’ve completed to date, I ensured I documented each step of the process. What follows is a start-to-finish walkthrough.

If you’re not familiar with Girl Talk, he’s this guy who does crazy-smooth, highly danceable mashups. (You can listen to a playlist of Girl Talk on Muzakbox.) Whenever I’m looking the fella up I always come across this picture:

I decided to try my hand at making something similar. This was a quick one, but I hope it’ll give an idea of what steps one can take to achieve this type of effect.

Preparation
- Still Time by Larabie Fonts
- A straight-on photo of a face
I recommend working large. We’ll be doing some rasterized text warping that won’t be noticeable when sized down.

The wp_get_archives template tag is one you’ve likely seen before—it displays date-based archives in a list much like what you see in my sidebar under “Explore.” Surprisingly, the parameters accepted for this tag allow no changes in the date format.
It’s difficult to customize this right from your theme, and I suspect that’s why I was unable to locate any flexible solutions through the Wordpress forums or Google. The easiest way is to edit the original function itself. Be warned: new Wordpress installations will overwrite this fix.

When I created Keetee back in January, I was relatively new to this almighty publishing platform called Wordpress. I put together a loose design plan in Photoshop inspired by the simplicity of Nerdist and Good Magazine, then went to work coding it up. The project took around two days—I recall having completed over a weekend—and the outcome looked something like this:

For two days of work, I wasn’t particularly displeased. I was impressed with the ease with which one can build a Wordpress theme, proud of myself for having done so with swiftness, and satisfied with the visual component of the design.
Queue the Querulousness
As time wore on, however, the flaws became increasingly apparent—I’d taken too many shortcuts, hadn’t done enough planning, left out details. I eventually became so unhappy with the site I didn’t want to update for fear new visitors would recognize these doofy indiscretions. Keetee just didn’t meet my standards for design, and my desire to use it gave way to evanescence.

A nice fellow from the FreelanceSwitch Forums was asking me about a reflection effect I used, so I decided to share a tutorial on the subject with everyone. We’re going to create a stack of photos and give them a slick reflection.

I’m back (less four wisdom teeth) with a new tutorial for creating a face with a cool, retro vibe.
Before we start, a little administrative update for my subscribers and anyone else who may be interested: I’m going to be branching out into topics other than Photoshop soon, so I’ll be researching ways to split up my feed so that those interested in only the Photoshop stuff can keep tabs on my tutorials without any clutter. If anyone can suggest a service or method for doing this, feel free to leave a comment. I’ll keep you all posted.

Sure is quiet around here… but with good reason! I’ve been under the weather with a toothache and will be undergoing oral surgery today. Yipes! Just wanted to let everyone know what accounts for the silence—I’ll be back with more content next week. Take care and wish me luck!
This tutorial will walk you through editing text to look like real graffiti on a concrete wall. Hope you like it!

The only assets we need for this tutorial are a concrete wall background and a stencil-like font. Here are links to what I used:
